  • The sun was barely up when I slipped away from the bedroom, my robe clutched tightly around me. My slippers whispered softly against the floor as I rolled Solenne’s crib into the living room. She was still fast asleep, her tiny hands curled into fists, one resting just beneath her cheek. Her lips made a soft sucking motion, like she was dreaming of nursing. Peaceful. So peaceful. Completely unaware of the tension that had soaked into the walls the day before, like smoke that refused to lift.
  • I knelt beside her crib for a moment, brushing a curl of hair from her forehead, watching the gentle rise and fall of her chest. She was okay. I kept telling myself that. We were okay. But the echo of Anne’s voice rang in my ears.
