  • The new house still smelled like wood and something lemony. I’d left the windows open all morning, letting in the sea air and the faint sound of birds that didn’t sound like the ones I’d grown used to. Italy was foreign and familiar all at once—too beautiful for the kind of pain I still carried, but soft enough to hold it anyway.
