- I couldn't sleep. The walls of the loft seemed to inch closer each time I blinked. Shadows curled around the corners like fingers reaching for me, and the creaking of the old beams sounded too much like footsteps. My heart hadn’t stopped racing since sunset. No matter how many times I told myself I was safe here, the truth screamed louder in my chest:
