• A crowd of people, some of them nude and others dressed in costumes ranging from the sensual to the utterly bizarre, were gathered in a large, softly lit room. The air was warm and thick with the mingling scents of perfume, sweat, and champagne. Along one side of the room stood long tables lined with trays of decadent chocolates, creamy cheeses, and sweet fruits, alongside platters of thinly sliced meats. A small champagne fountain glittered beneath the lights, sending a steady stream of pale gold liquid into waiting glasses.
