Chapter 28 Brewing Trouble

• "Welcome to the Java Joint," Briar said as she handed a laminated menu to the newest customer. Her voice was calm and steady, even though her shift had already been long. "We are featuring our espresso happy hour today with two-for-one latte flavor shots. What can I start you off with, sir?"
• The burly man leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed on her rather than the menu. He gave a half-smile, the kind Briar had grown accustomed to since starting the job. "What makes a beautiful woman like you wait tables in a place like this?" he asked, his tone smooth but intrusive.
• Briar forced a polite smile, choosing not to show her irritation. "Five dollars an hour plus tips," she replied evenly, her voice light. "Which are always deeply appreciated." She gestured to the menu as if to redirect his attention. "Would you like to try a Cuban coffee? They are half off right now."
