- Briar's throat tightened, and tears began to well up in her eyes. She fought them back, refusing to let Damien see how much his presence still affected her. "She is your problem, not mine," she said softly but firmly.
- "You are right," Damien replied after a long pause. His voice was steady, but there was something heavier beneath it, something unspoken. As he parked the sleek black Audi outside her apartment building, his sharp gaze swept over the place. "This looks like a decent spot," he murmured.
- Briar let out a bitter laugh. "No, it does not." Her voice cracked, betraying her exhaustion. She blinked rapidly, forcing the tears back. "If Nora is trying to blackmail you again, Damien, then you need to go to the police. That is your fight, not mine."
