Chapter 90 Whispers In The Dark

  • Jeremy POV
  • The hospital was a labyrinth of sterile light and shadow in the dead of night, its corridors hushed save for the faint hum of machines and the occasional murmur of voices. I sat in a hard plastic chair beside the sofa where Rachel slept, her form curled into a tight ball under a thin hospital blanket, her face softened by exhaustion but etched with the strain of the day. The room was small, dominated by Bonnie’s hospital bed, where she lay connected to a web of tubes and monitors, their steady beeps a fragile assurance that she was holding on. Gabriel was beside her, his arms wrapped protectively around her, his face buried in her hair as he slept, their breathing a quiet symphony in the dim light.
  • I’d tried to convince Rachel to go home, to rest in a proper bed, but she’d refused, her voice fierce despite her tears. “I’m staying with her,” she’d said, her eyes blazing with loyalty, and I hadn’t pushed further, knowing that stubborn streak was part of what I loved about her. But sleep wouldn’t come for me, not with the weight of the day pressing down, the memory of Rachel’s tearful call, the image of Bonnie’s wrecked car seared into my mind.
