• When I stepped out of Rachel’s house, the cool night air hit my face, but it brought no relief. My head was a whirlwind, thoughts crashing like cars on a lawless track. I climbed into the car, my hands gripping the steering wheel tighter than necessary, trying to anchor the anger, frustration, and fear. Cody was there, in her house, and it made no sense. Not to me. The guy vanished for years, left Rachel behind like she was nothing, and now he showed up, wanting to live with her? It was absurd, a risk I couldn’t ignore. I wasn’t going to let this happen without a fight, but first, I needed a plan. And I needed to talk to Nick.
