  • I kept my expression calm and my posture relaxed, even as Amara’s words rang in my ears like nails on a chalkboard. She blocked my path, her arms crossed and her mouth twisted into a smug grin. It was clear she enjoyed every second of the tension she was stirring up. I fought to hold my temper, taking a slow breath, reminding myself that nothing she could say would rattle me. I had been through far worse than petty insults.
  • With a tilt of her head, Amara’s eyes gleamed with a cruel, satisfied glint as she leaned in closer, her voice a low, venomous whisper. “Oh, please,” she sneered. “Look at you, standing there like you belong. You must be delusional if you think you can just waltz back into this pack, pretending to be one of us, when you’re nothing more than an outsider—a parasite clinging to the edges.”
