• "All right, please give us a moment," he replied, rising from his chair and moving toward the door as Dahlia pressed closer to her mother, tightening her embrace.
• Her mother offered no questions; instead, she provided comfort, holding Dahlia until the officer returned. Dahlia hoped they had dispatched a patrol to investigate the woods, but the news was far from reassuring.
