Chapter 70

• Elisa has already sent me Emily's room number, so I head over to her. I walk in and am surprised to see so many people in her room. I thought there was only one person at a time. Marc, Natacha, John, Hugo, Elisa with her baby in her arms, stare at me, or rather, stare at Maya who is asleep in my arms, and I'm surprised when they smile at me. I thought they were going to yell at me, but they don't. They seem happy that I'm here.
• They all decide to leave and leave me alone with Emily. Natasha reaches out to grab Maya and leaves the room. I sit down in the chair next to Emily's bed. I finally look at her and my jaw clenches at the sight of her swollen face, sunken cheeks and the numerous bruises on her arms and face.
• I gently place my hand on her cheek and caress it for I don't know how many minutes. But I stop stroking her when I see that her eyes are wide open.
