• As I leave the doctor's office, I look around for Hugo, cursing. Where the hell has that asshole gone? I gasp, head for my sister's room and pause for a moment at the door, before entering.
• I put my hand in front of my mouth when I finally see her after several days. I approach her bed and feel tears welling up in my eyes. My God, Emily, she's lost so much weight! Her cheeks are sunken in. Her face is bruised and scratched, as are her arms. I burst into tears and gently caress her disfigured face.
