Chapter 63 Questions Without Answers

  • Daniel sat in his office, staring out of the large window that overlooked the bustling city below. The morning sun streamed in, casting a warm glow over the room, but Daniel felt anything but warm inside. His mind was racing, replaying the conversation he’d had with Mildred the day before, trying to make sense of her strange reaction. It was the way she’d looked at him, the shock in her eyes when she realized he was alive, that had unsettled him the most.
  • It had been almost five years since that night—five years since he had been left for dead in a dark alley, his life hanging by a thread. Daniel had always suspected that someone from the McCloud family had been involved, but he had never been able to prove it. Now, seeing Mildred’s reaction, he couldn’t shake the feeling that she knew more than she was letting on.
  • He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples as he tried to piece it all together. Mildred’s words kept echoing in his mind: “Are you alive?” It wasn’t just a surprised question; it was as if she had genuinely believed he was dead. But why? How could she know anything about what had happened to him five years ago? Unless… unless she had been involved.
