Chapter 4 Growing Closer

  • Natalie had spent most of her day pouring over company records, trying to piece together Mildred’s schemes. It was exhausting work, but she couldn’t shake the sense of betrayal. As the sun began to set, Daniel suggested they take a break.
  • “Come on, let’s get some fresh air,” he said, gently pulling her away from her desk.
  • Natalie hesitated but eventually nodded. “Alright, I could use a break.”
  • They walked through the company garden, a peaceful area filled with blooming flowers and the soft sound of a trickling fountain. Natalie felt the tension in her shoulders ease a bit.
  • “Thank you for everything, Daniel,” she said quietly. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
  • Daniel smiled warmly. “You don’t have to thank me, Natalie. I’m just doing my job.”
  • Natalie shook her head. “It’s more than that. You’ve been a rock for me through all of this.”
  • They continued walking, their conversation flowing effortlessly. Natalie found herself laughing at Daniel’s stories about his time in the military, and she felt a warmth she hadn’t felt in a long time.
  • As they walked back to the office, Daniel stopped suddenly. “Natalie, there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
  • Natalie’s heart skipped a beat. “What is it?”
  • Daniel took a deep breath, his eyes locking onto hers. “I’ve grown to care about you, Natalie. More than just as your bodyguard.”
  • Natalie felt her cheeks flush. “Daniel, I… I feel the same way.”
  • Before she could say anything more, Daniel leaned in, and their lips met in a soft, lingering kiss. It was gentle at first, but quickly grew more passionate. Natalie’s heart raced as she wrapped her arms around him, deepening the kiss. It felt like the world around them disappeared, leaving only the two of them.
  • When they finally pulled apart, both were breathless. Natalie’s mind was a whirlwind of emotions. She had fallen for Daniel, and it was exhilarating and terrifying all at once.
  • “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time,” Daniel said, his voice husky.
  • Natalie smiled. “Me too.”
  • Unbeknownst to them, Mildred had been watching from a distance. She had come to the garden to clear her head and had stumbled upon their intimate moment. Jealousy flared within her as she watched Natalie and Daniel together. It wasn’t fair. Natalie had everything—beauty, brains, and now, it seemed, love. Mildred felt the familiar sting of resentment. She had always felt overshadowed by Natalie, and seeing her cousin happy only intensified her feelings of inadequacy.
  • As Natalie and Daniel walked back to the office, Mildred slipped away, her mind racing. She couldn’t stand the idea of Natalie having what she couldn’t. Mildred’s jealousy turned into a simmering rage. She would find a way to turn things around in her favor. She always did.
  • Back in the office, Natalie and Daniel resumed their work, but there was a new, unspoken understanding between them. They were a team, not just professionally but personally. Natalie felt a sense of hope and excitement for the future.
  • However, the sense of impending trouble lingered. Mildred was a force to be reckoned with, and Natalie knew their battle was far from over. She just hoped that with Daniel by her side, they could overcome whatever came their way.
  • The rest of the evening was spent preparing for the next steps in their plan to expose Mildred’s treachery. But now, there was an added layer of complexity. Their growing feelings for each other made everything more intense, more personal. As they worked late into the night, stealing glances and sharing small, tender touches, Natalie felt a deep sense of connection. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she wasn’t alone.
  • Little did they know, Mildred was already plotting her next move. She wouldn’t let Natalie win so easily. The game was far from over, and Mildred was determined to come out on top, no matter the cost.
