• It felt like the weight on my chest had finally lightened, just a little. Axel was recovering. It wasn’t fast, but it was steady. The doctor had given us good news this morning, and I could almost taste the relief on my tongue. It was still hard to believe that we’d made it this far, after everything that had happened, the poison, the desperation, and the fear that Axel might not make it, now we were here. Axel was going to be fine. It was just a matter of time.
• Still, something tugged at the back of my mind. The one thing I couldn’t shake. Asher. We hadn’t been able to reach him for days, and it was starting to wear on me. I’d tried everything I could think of, calling his phone, instructing Aiden to reach out to those people who might know where he was, even trying to reach my pack, but nothing. Silence. He was out there, somewhere, and I had no idea where.
