• I tried my best to keep my emotions hidden, but the tears filling my eyes to the brim were a testament to them. Pretending to sneeze, I moved in the other direction and soaked the excess water with a sleeve.
• “You should return to bed now,” I began with a fake smile. “I’ll do the same after I finish my call with Elaine. You came in the middle of it. Tomorrow, I am going to her house to pick up my contract, and we have yet to decide a time.”
• Mia patted me on my shoulder and looked me dead in the eye. “I hope you don’t ruin your relationship by searching for a facade where there is none.”
