  • I wiped the sweat from my brow, the sun already high in the sky despite the early hour. Even though we trained in the mornings to avoid so, the air still hung heavy around us. I’d been working on my form, practicing the same sequence over and over, just as Zephyr had taught me. Slowly but surely, I was improving.
  • “Remember to keep your balance,” Zephyr’s deep voice called from a few paces away. He wasn’t looking at me, his eyes moving across the horizon, but I knew he was paying attention. He always was.
  • I adjusted my position, letting out a small sigh of frustration. It’s been two weeks since Zephyrs realization about Janie’s death. We’d been back to training for nearly one week, and though Zephyr was still down by the news of Janie’s death, he was getting better.
