Chapter 37 One Step Closer

• "What was happening?" I was so confused because ever since I was born, the alarm had never gone off. I didn’t even think it could, especially here. Our home was supposed to be safe, impossible for enemies to get into, let alone attack.
• "Mom? Dad?" I yelled, but there was no answer. I didn’t know if I should stay inside or go out and find them. Then I started hearing screams. With my sharp hearing, I could tell they weren’t far away. People were screaming—women, children, and even men.
• I smelled something burning, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. It smelled like a mix of trees, rubber, and... flesh? I ran to the window and pulled back the curtain. Outside, everything was on fire. The whole town was burning.
