- The news hit me like a slap across the face. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Roderick, the leader of the hunters, had just told me that they were backing out. Washing their hands from my cause. I stared at him, rage boiling in my veins, trying to understand how this had come to be. The hunters had been essential to my plans, the muscle I needed to finally take down Bustan. And now, they were walking away?
- “You can’t be serious,” I said, my voice low and dangerous. “After everything I’ve paid you, after the battles we’ve fought together, you’re just going to abandon me?”
