• The child peered around, looking up at her with a wide grin that startled her and whispered, "Hi."
• It felt instinctual to reach down toward him, and before she fully grasped what she was doing, she found him cradled in her arms. He nestled in close, pressing his damp little nose against her cheek, and she could feel remnants of chocolate around his mouth sticking to her skin.
• "Where is your mother?" she asked, her voice rough and scratchy.
