  • I needed a weapon—something, anything—to give me a fighting chance to escape. I couldn't just rot away in this cell, waiting for Speranza and her followers to haul me out for the kill. Desperation crept in, and almost unconsciously, my thoughts drifted to Alitos.
  • Was anyone from the resistance even looking for me? Why would they? After all, Alessandro had grown stronger, his ranks bolstered after my deal with Stefano. He didn’t need me anymore, as harsh as it was to admit. He had warriors far stronger than I’d ever been. The only one who might search for me was Livia, but even she would need backup against Ezio’s forces.
  • I took a shaky breath, trying to settle my chaotic thoughts. I couldn’t bank on some miraculous rescue. With the wolfsbane finally flushed from my veins, I had to find my own leverage, my own escape. Bracing myself, I pressed my hand against the damp, grimy wall and ran it over every rough stone, desperate for anything useful. I didn’t want to think about the filth I touched; the darkness was my only mercy.
