Chapter 34
- I’d waited for Stefano until dawn, but he never returned. Anxiety wrapped around me tighter with every passing moment, amplifying my senses to any faint sound from outside. The knowledge that the Supreme Squad occupied the neighboring rooms should have reassured me, but it only heightened my unease.
- I kept wondering why Stefano and Antonio hadn’t come back. Had they been caught off guard? Had General Emiliano found the remaining members of the Fang Hills Pack? A shiver rippled through me at the thought of that boy and his sisters, wondering how many young pups might be in hiding. I knew of General Emiliano only from whispered stories within the resistance, enough to believe he wouldn’t hesitate to spill innocent blood.
- Worry gnawed at me not just for them, but for myself. As the lone non-shifter among a throng of hardened soldiers, I’d surely attracted a few glares. I could defend myself against a few foes if needed, but surrounded as I was, I knew the odds were stacked against me. In essence, I was trapped in a den of predators.
