• The note burned in my hand, as though it carried a fever of its own. Even now, after reading it a dozen times, the words seem to whisper louder rather than fade. “...Do with this what you want, but I’d advise you to keep this from Alpha Kieran. He may not even save you.”
• I stared at it again, maybe for the last time. The ink had bled slightly, like the pen had been pressed too hard. I turned it over, then again, half-hoping that on this third—or tenth—inspection, a secret would reveal itself. Maybe a name, an initial, or even a smudge that made sense.
