Chapter 15 What Does a Man Like in a Woman?

  • That commanding tone of his from earlier was still fresh in her mind, but now, he had showed up right in front of her not even an hour after their phone call. Diane was quite surprised to see him.
  • “Why are you here?”
  • “I was just passing by.”
  • Christopher’s eyes were emotionless as usual; as he frowned, he looked toward the fire department and security guards who were busy with the incident. He then said impatiently, “You’re fine, right? Let’s go.”
  • Without a second’s delay, he turned around and started walking away. Diane hastily thanked her lifesavers and followed after him.
  • They arrived home without exchanging a single word on the road. In addition to that, it was her first time seeing Christopher at night after their unanticipated marriage. Diane’s heart sped up at the thought of it, and she was feeling more nervous than she was back when she had been trapped in the elevator.
  • “Um… Thanks for coming. I’m going upstairs.”
  • She blurted her thanks rapidly like a guilty thief before rushing toward the staircase with her head lowered.
  • To her surprise, the moment she rushed past Christopher, his hand locked onto her wrist—the inertia of the impulse sent her crashing into the man’s arms.
  • At the same time, a sweet and pleasant scent hit her nose; she was momentarily stuck in a daze.
  • It’s… the scent of a woman’s perfume.
  • “Were you really working overtime until over 10.00PM? Do you think you live in a hotel, Diane? Is this a place where you come and go as you please?”
  • Christopher questioned her fiercely with an accusing tone; his eyes were sharp with hostility as they bored into her. His fingertips rested against her pulse on her wrist, and she felt her arm go numb all of a sudden.
  • The thought of the perfume on his clothes still lingered in her mind; since she couldn’t break free from his hold, she leaned in and took a sniff.
  • “How about you, Mr. Wayne? As a married man yourself, which strip club did you grace your presence with tonight?”
  • “Are you trying to teach me a lesson?”
  • Just then, Christopher raised her arm harshly; his anger had became more apparent in his eyes.
  • “No,” Diane denied confidently. She then said, “I’m just making it clear—compared to the man who’s been fooling around all night, my hard work seems like a more appropriate reason to come home late.”
  • “Diane,” Christopher snapped as he stared at Diane. His piercing gaze rapidly stripped away the tough facade that she was putting on.
  • Just as her tenacious pretense was falling apart, he flung away her wrist and scoffed lightly.
  • “I finally know why Norman pushed you away. You’re not lovable at all.”
  • A scornful smirk hung on his lips, and his blatant insult stabbed through Diane’s heart mercilessly like a dagger.
  • What a failure she was—the man she loved for many years had abandoned her without a second thought. Somehow, it was the same for the man who’d practically dragged her to get married—he wasn’t interested in her at all.
  • Indeed, she had failed as a woman.
  • As soon as she heard that, Diane fell silent immediately; she hung her head and smiled in self-pity.
  • “You’re right, Mr. Wayne—I’m not lovable at all. Since you’re so experienced with lovable women, why don’t you teach me how to become one?”
  • Christopher raised a brow as she put a hand on his shoulder and slowly leaned in close to him.
  • She did not have anything to drink, but interestingly, she was feeling a little drunk.
  • At that moment, she recalled her failed first marriage, the humiliation that she’d suffered from Stella earlier that day, and her frightening and vulnerable experience in the elevator—her head spinned as though she had taken a few shots.
  • “What is it that a man likes in a woman? Is it when they do this?”
  • Her other arm followed suit and gently coiled around his neck. She looked up at the man who was a lot taller than her—he was wearing a dark and unreadable expression.
  • “Or when they do this…”
  • Diane took a shallow breath and tipped her toes; her moist, supple lips curved into an elegant smile. Then, she closed their distance and planted her lips directly onto his.
  • As their lips touched, hers felt incredibly soft and cool.
