Chapter 9 Sensitive Issues

  • Marina despised that arrangement, but Helena was her leader and her idol. Hence, she had no choice but to obey.
  • Christopher looked confused. “Honey, where are you off to?”
  • Helena replied a little impatiently, “I need to work at the office for a while. That place is nowhere near the university and is safe, so you don't need to protect me. It's perfect, actually. Didn't you say this is your first time here in Tayhaven? Marina knows this place well. She can be your tour guide and show you around.”
  • With that, Helena turned around and left.
  • Marina was left in the car, feeling especially awkward.
  • Nevertheless, keeping Christopher company was the mission she was assigned to, so she had no choice but to do that.
  • Forcing a smile, she asked, “Where would you like to go, Mr. Lawson?”
  • Christopher laughed. “Let's take a walk in the city center. A brief tour will do. After that, let's head back to your office.”
  • “But, uh, Ms. York already told you that she will be busy.”
  • Christopher crossed his arms. “Helena is my wife, so as her husband, it's only natural that I go check out her workplace, right? Besides, she can do her job as I work on my stuff. We won't get in each other's way. You can kick me out of the car in the middle of the road, but I'll eventually find my way over.”
  • Marina was fuming internally.
  • This good-for-nothing parasitic jerk! There's just no way to get rid of him, is there?
  • Despite her anger, Marina kept a straight face.
  • “Ms. York is trying to be nice to you, Mr. Lawson. Even if you head over, she'll be too busy to talk to you and you can't see her either. Won't that be boring?”
  • “Boring? Not at all! I have you, right?”
  • Ugh, you freaking pervert!
  • Marina was burning with anger. At that moment, all she wanted to do was to drive to the other end of the city and kick Christopher out of the car.
  • He can march his way over to get back to Commander York!
  • After calming herself down, she fired up the engine and started working on her assignment.
  • “This is the tallest building in the city, Silicone Tower. Many of the top five hundred companies in the world have an office here.
  • “This is Tayhaven's theme park. It is extremely popular.
  • “This is...”
  • Christopher scanned the surrounding buildings in delight as he listened to Marina's words.
  • “No wonder Tayhaven is an internationally recognized city. Not bad. Not bad at all. By the way, where is my wife's office? She just started her business, so she probably can't afford an office in the city center, right?”
  • Marina grinned and shook her head.
  • It was at that moment an idea struck her.
  • Rather than dealing with the sticky situation myself, I can just outsource that problem to someone who is better equipped to handle situations like this.
  • Well, we have the perfect candidate for this job...
  • “You're wrong, Mr. Lawson. Ms. York's company is right here!”
  • Marina lifted her finger, and Christopher saw that she was pointed at a skyscraper some distance ahead.
  • That building... Isn't that the Silicone Tower that she spoke about earlier?
  • No way... My wife's company is here? Holy moly! The annual rent has got to be around two to three million. Is my wife a billionaire?
  • Christopher's lips quirked up.
  • Seeing that, Marina cursed inwardly, He's not just a pervert. He's also a money-minded b*stard. No, this won't do. I must get that person to chase this parasite away!
  • “I am simply Ms. York's secretary, whereas you are her husband, so I must obey your instructions as well. As for the reason she set up her office here, that I'm not too sure myself.”
  • Christopher couldn't help grinning when he heard that response. “That's better. We're all one big happy family, aren't we?”
  • Oh, you are not my family, you sick pervert!
  • “Wait here while I park the car. I will take you to Ms. York's office.”
  • After parking the car, Marina led Christopher into the elevator, and up they went to the twenty-third floor.
  • The second they exited the elevator, the words, “Helena's Technologies,” showed up in front of Christopher.
  • He scanned around and was surprised to learn that Helena's company owned the entire floor.
  • This is the so-called small company that my wife refers to? The annual rent is probably around six to seven million!
  • Christopher started recalculating Helena's wealth.
  • Upon noticing Marina, the young and beautiful receptionist at the front desk greeted her warmly, “Good afternoon, Ms. Montague.”
  • “Good afternoon, Nancy. Oh, by the way, this is Mr. Christopher Lawson. He is Ms. York's lover and has only recently moved to Tayhaven. He wants to look around but is not accustomed to this place. Please keep him company. I have some urgent matters to take care of. I'll get back to you soon.” Marina winked at the receptionist.
  • The receptionist in question was actually one of the two special forces agents planted in the company. Everyone else was ordinary citizens hired to work on corporate matters.
  • According to Helena, she needed her people at the key locations.
  • The best option was to have one agent follow her around and the other monitor everything from the front desk.
  • The two agents she chose were extremely in sync. All it took was one wink for Nancy to know exactly what to do.
  • “All right, leave him to me.”
  • Marina left after that.
  • Christopher thought that Nancy would give him a tour of the place, but she got him a cup of tea instead and had him sit and wait in the reception room.
  • It didn't take long before he witnessed the terrifying social skills the lady had.
  • “Wow, you are so handsome, Mr. Lawson. You and Ms. York are indeed a match made in heaven.”
  • Christopher didn't know how to reply to that.
  • “C'mon, Mr. Lawson. Share with me. How did the two of you get together? Oh, I have always loved a romantic story.”
  • Christopher remained silent.
  • “Mr. Lawson, the weather here is pretty hot, and the city is right next to the ocean. Have you gotten accustomed to the smell?”
  • Christopher still didn't respond.
  • He was utterly speechless.
  • “Uh, can we talk about something else?”
  • Nancy guffawed. “Okay, sure. I guess you want to talk about something sensitive, huh?”
  • Christopher thought that Nancy was going to talk about Helena's secrets, so he nodded right away.
  • To his surprise, Nancy lowered her voice and asked, “Mr. Lawson, what is your take on the political unrest in Ibando?”
  • Christopher was at a loss for words.
  • “Oh, I see you don't like to talk about sensitive issues. Let's talk about something more positive then. Our country recently launched a rocket into space, and our astronauts made it to the moon! They even collected some soil and sample. God, I am so proud of us!”
  • At that moment, all Christopher felt was a banging headache.
  • Damn, this receptionist is a chatterbox!
  • Unable to bear it anymore, he asked, “Uh, Ms. Swan, will it be okay for me to check this place out?”
  • Nancy froze and replied firmly, “That is fine, but the paperwork will be troublesome. We have three layers of security, and Ms. York is very strict about protecting the company's confidential information. That is why everyone who enters must go through a thorough checkup. Once the medical checkup shows that everything is good, the person has to sign a non-disclosure agreement. Naturally, that is followed by an intense investigation into that person's past and a—”
  • “Okay, fine, forget about it,” Christopher quickly interrupted, feeling another wave of headache coming. “I don't want to look around anymore.”
  • Nancy smiled. “Yeah, it's so much better for us to just chat, isn't it? Let me share something with you, Mr. Lawson...”
  • Nancy spoke nonstop for the next hour. She had so much nonsense to share that she didn't even need to repeat herself or go back to the same topic.
  • Christopher eventually raised the white flag. “Actually, Ms. Swan, I have a thing I have to get to, so I better head out now. Bye!”
