Chapter 4 I Will Protect You

  • Cayden's eyes were filled with nothing but respect for Helena.
  • She was the best special forces agent in Chanaea as well as the chief instructor for two special forces teams, Bloodspike and Draco.
  • As she held the title of major general in the military, those who saw her would address her respectfully as “General York.”
  • She had set far too many incredible records and accomplished tons of missions that were near impossible, which was exactly why she got promoted to major general at such a young age.
  • Had it not been for the mysterious murders of two undercover operatives at Tayhaven University, there was no way a young special forces agent like Cayden would ever meet a legendary hero like her in his entire life, let alone serve as one of her assistants.
  • Helena clenched her fists upon hearing what he said, and a murderous glint flashed in her eyes.
  • As the two murdered undercover operatives were her best friends, Helena had offered to personally investigate the incident here in Tayhaven.
  • “I've told you countless times to never address me like that regardless of where we are.”
  • Her tone was calm, but her stern expression sent chills down Cayden's spine.
  • “Yes, Ms. York! It won't happen again!” he said while nodding profusely.
  • “Tell me, what have you found?” Helena asked with an indifferent expression.
  • Cayden glanced about to make sure no one was paying attention before replying, “Both undercover operatives made contact with a common individual before they died. His name is Ulric Tanner, and he's a well-known playboy here in Tayhaven.”
  • Helena frowned as she reconfirmed his statement, “Ulric Tanner? Are you sure it's him?”
  • Cayden replied with a solemn look on his face, “I've learned quite a lot from you, Ms. York. Rest assured that my findings are absolutely accurate!”
  • Helena stared blankly at the young men and women moving to the beat on the dance floor and went into deep thought.
  • “Ulric is indeed a playboy, but he has practically wooed every single woman around him, including our undercover operatives. Therefore, this clue of yours has no value whatsoever.”
  • Cayden cried out indignantly, “I'm sure this lead is solid. You have to believe me, Ms. York! Both operatives really did meet Ulric on the day of their deaths! It could've been a coincidence the first time, but this happened a second time! You taught me this yourself!”
  • Helena nodded. “You're right. In that case, I'll do some digging on Ulric in the university tomorrow. I've made no progress on this investigation despite being here for over a month now... Looks like it's time we expanded the scope of our investigation and cover the entire city thoroughly.”
  • Suddenly, a figure appeared behind them and said with a chuckle, “You two are acting quite secretive about this. What, are you guys discussing something of national importance?”
  • Cayden's jaw dropped in shock when he spun around and saw Christopher standing behind them.
  • Since when did he get here? Don't tell me he heard everything!
  • Helena then pulled him over and said with a smile, “I didn't know you like standing behind people like that, Darling! That's rude!”
  • “I only like standing behind people under a specific condition,” Christopher said with a mischievous grin.
  • Everyone instantly understood what he meant as they were all adults.
  • Cayden felt incredibly tempted to give Christopher a beating when he heard him insult his idol, who was also his superior.
  • However, due to his current disguise as a manager, Cayden could only smile at Christopher and keep his anger suppressed.
  • Helena didn't mind it, though.
  • “Do you know what we're talking about, Darling?” she asked.
  • “I was just kidding. You guys carry on chatting, yeah?” Christopher replied with a smile.
  • Helena tried to test the waters by uttering, “We were talking about murders!”
  • Christopher's eyes went wide. “You mean the two murders that took place in Tayhaven University?”
  • The unsolved murders had become a hot topic in the city, so it was only natural that Christopher had heard about it.
  • “Yeah. Cayden knows a lot of things due to his job as a manager here, so I was trying to ask him if he knew something about it. Both of those victims were from the course I transferred into!” Helena exclaimed with a sigh.
  • Shocked, Christopher blurted, “Why didn't you tell me that sooner?”
  • Helena replied with a wry smile, “Well, you never asked.”
  • “Oh, right, you're a fourth-year transfer student at Tayhaven University! Yeah, I should've thought about asking. You Biology students are taking a break after what happened, I assume?”
  • Helena flashed him a helpless smile as she answered, “The first victim died a little over two months ago, and classes were canceled for a week. The second victim died two days after classes resumed, so we were told to go on break for another two weeks. I don't know what happened, but we're back in class again for some reason. Everyone's really scared, so I thought I'd see if Cayden knew anything. I can't graduate unless I get enough credit hours from attending classes, after all.”
  • “Don't worry, Honey. I will protect you for sure! To do so, I'll follow you both to university and to work. I don't have anything else to do lately, so I might as well focus on keeping you safe,” Christopher said solemnly.
  • What the f*ck? Having this guy around could very well screw everything up for us! Besides, I know who he really is. Despite his claims to protect Commander York, this guy is nothing but an unemployed bum! How could someone like him possibly protect Commander York? I bet he's the only man in existence who could speak so proudly about relying on his wife! Cayden thought to himself.
  • “That would be too much trouble for you, Darling! The university is pretty safe during the day, so I don't need you protecting me,” Helena said with a smile.
  • It was obvious that she, too, knew Christopher would only get in the way of her investigation.
  • Christopher patted himself on the chest and said confidently, “Protecting you is no trouble at all! All right, it's decided, then! End of discussion!”
  • At that moment, Helena couldn't help but have the same thoughts about Christopher as Cayden.
  • She made a few more attempts to talk Christopher out of it, but he was determined to protect her no matter what.
  • Eventually, Helena had no choice but to excuse herself to the bathroom to calm down.
  • Cayden bowed politely at Christopher before getting back to work as well.
  • Yet, Christopher waited for quite a long time, but Helena did not return.
  • Feeling uneasy, he decided to go looking for her in the bathroom.
  • As he arrived outside the bathroom entrance, he heard loud noises coming from the emergency exit nearby.
  • His heart clenched in his chest as he quickly ran toward the exit, only to be stunned by the sight that greeted him.
  • A woman with an elegant figure had leaped into the air and sent a bald man flying with a single kick.
  • She was none other than Helena herself.
