Chapter 22

  • Nathan took care of Kelly for the three days she needed to recover fully, though that final day she probably didn’t need him. He went home only twice to change and care for his bathing needs because he didn’t fit in her shower.
  • Nathan’s care was nearly stifling. He hovered. He asked after her every time she moved. He checked on her. He fetched and bought and got her anything she needed. He cleaned up her tissues and washed her clothes in the shitty laundry facility three stories down. In between force-feeding her soup and medicine and refusing to let her do more than go to the bathroom by herself, he sat at her rickety table in her one wobbly chair. He used her fancy laptop that he had bought her to work on his programming and email his employees. He didn’t have a laptop for some reason and refused to leave her alone for longer than two hours.
  • She should have hated it. Kelly was an independent woman who did what needed to be done. He might have found her at her lowest point, but she would have figured it out. She always did, even if it meant quitting school and trying again when her life was more stable. Maybe she didn’t manage as nicely as when he cared for her, but she would have survived. But she didn’t hate it. She loved it.
