- My throat felt completely dry, like Sahara dry. My knees weren’t shaking but they weren’t exactly firm either. I tried to tell him to move, to back off, to stop whatever he thought he was doing, but the words tangled at the back of my throat like a knot I couldn’t loosen.
- “Xander,” I finally managed, though it came out in a different tone than I wanted. A tone I never thought I could ever use.
