Chapter 19 Nineteen
- I could feel my pulse pounding in my ears in a sound of panic that refused to stop. The precinct felt suffocating, its walls closing in on me as I sat in the cold, hard chair under the bright lights that buzzed overhead. The officers were relentless, yelling accusations. They weren’t even giving me a chance to speak, let alone explain. Every time I tried to get a word in, they cut me off with another question that felt more like an attack.
- “You were seen leaving your house last night and didn’t return until this morning. Care to explain that?” one officer snapped, his cold eyes zeroing me in.
- “I—” I started, my voice trembling, but he didn’t let me finish.
