  • “The carriage hit a fallen tree that was covered deep in the snow. We didn’t see it until it was too late.” The guard answered. Anna noticed for the first time how casually they were all dressed—as if they were normal travelers with a dark drab coat and beige pants. Normally the royal guard were dripped in finery to represent the palace. Anna didn’t think she’d ever seen a guard in anything but his uniform.
  • “How long will it take until we can get back on the road?” Prince Lucas asked, he glanced back at Anna before he looked around the area. At least it seemed that no one else was around for miles. The deeper into the north, the more dangerous it became.
  • “We should have it up and fixed by the end of the hour. It’s a good spot to rest for a meal before we continue on through. We might not get another chance to rest for a long while.”
