• When I opened my eyes, the hospital's smell was the first thing I noticed. I tried to adjust to the intense light by blinking a few times. Every muscle in my body ached, as though I had just engaged in combat. My senses returned, bringing with them the faint beeping of the devices all around me and the gentle murmuring of nearby voices.
• With a sinking heart, I turned my head to see Gina and Isabella seated next to me. Gina appeared overly composed, as though she had been practicing her appearance for when I wake up. With her hands folded in her lap and her gaze fixed on the ground, Isabella became silent.
