Chapter 6 New Role

  • EVA
  • “màma, why are you crying” eight years me questioned.
  • Ever since pàpa died she has been crying herself to sleep but she recently didn't anymore, only for me to catch a sight of her in pàpa’s study crying her eyes out.
  • “Go to your room Eva,I am fine” her soft voice floated out but her eyes didn't find mine.
  • “But your eyes are puffy and wet, I don't like to see you cry” I said, shuffling closer to her and sitting on her lap. My hand found its way into her scalp, softly massaging it just the way she likes it.
  • But today she didn't snuggle into it, instead she removed my hand and hugged me slightly, still crying.
  • We heard a crack sound coming from the door and there stood Elena, her eyes red from incessant crying.
  • Màma set me down and moved to her.
  • “Sweetie why are you crying” she spoke softly, her soft hands picking Elena up and settling her down on the mahogany desk in the center of the room and she did the same thing with me, then she sat in between us, her tears dried already.
  • “I had a nightmare màma, the devil is unto me” Elena said she was the innocent one, never arguing, the quiet twin.
  • “Shhh it's okay sweetie,am here now and I will fight off the devil for you ‘
  • I walked over to the door and opened it slightly. The servants quarters didn't have a luxurious door where we could peek to know who was standing outside.
  • The stern face of Lucia and her mother Nicole outside my door got me curious, when I noticed they were the ones, I opened the door wide this time, silently ushering them into the room.
  • What do they want now?
  • The line on Lucia's face grew evident and her lips were drawn into thin line, pressed together firmly, Nicole on the other hand seemed like she wanted to be anywhere but here.
  • “Well?” I said after the silence had stretched for too long, irritation laced in my voice.
  • Lucia cleared her throat and began “ As you know, the Manor is reviewing staff and adding more safety precautions, they have decided that all the servants get new rooms assigned to them” she paused and continued, she was a woman of few words and too many years of experience on this.
  • “The new roles will be printed down and placed close to the library notice board in a few minutes, work starts effectively tomorrow” she concluded and without another word turned on her heel and left while Nicole gave me a dirty look and followed her.
  • Why that girl doesn't seem to like me baffles me but I will make sure I burn her to the ground along with this luxurious hell hole.
  • I just hope this new role wouldn't involve me scrubbing the hallway, that shit always gets my hands bleeding afterwards.
  • Uhhh I hate this, who the hell is Diego.
  • I picked up my phone suddenly realizing I didn't terminate the call earlier with Dominik.
  • “I'm sure you heard that” I questioned
  • “Yea, you see why I suggested we lay low now, get his trust, act like the dutiful maid and it will get him off your back, with his track record,I am sure he has set a few traps, one I wouldn't want you to fall victim too,got it “ he demanded rather harshly.
  • I balled my fist, suppressing the anger I felt. I hate taking orders and now I am stuck in this hole for more time than I envisioned because of some stupid bastard who crawled out from God knows where to ruin things for me.
  • Diego Moretto obviously has made an enemy out of me.
  • ***
  • I stepped out of the room towards the library. The hallway was quieter than usual, the tension from around here thick as hell.I reached the notice board and scanned the list of new roles.
  • Housekeeping, Diego’s quarters.
  • Great. Just what I needed. Cleaning the enemy’s room. I had to suppress a groan. This was going to be tricky. But maybe, just maybe, it was also an opportunity. Being in Diego's personal space could give me an edge, information that I desperately needed.
  • I grabbed my cleaning supplies and made my way to Diego's room. The door loomed in front of me, a silent guardian of secrets. I took a deep breath and knocked.
  • "Come in," came the deep, authoritative and cold voice from within.
  • I pushed the door open and stepped inside. Diego was sitting at his desk, reviewing documents. He didn’t look up as I entered.
  • "Housekeeping," I announced, trying to keep my voice steady.
  • "Go ahead," he said curtly, not bothering to glance my way.
  • I started my tasks, meticulously dusting and organizing. My eyes scanned the room for anything out of the ordinary. Papers, a laptop, personal items, anything could be a clue.
  • As I worked, Diego finally looked up. His gaze was intense, scrutinizing me.
  • "Eva, right?" he asked, his voice a low rumble.
  • "Yes, Signore Moretto," I replied, keeping my tone respectful.
  • "Do your job well, and there won't be any problems," he said, his eyes never leaving mine.
  • "Of course, Signore," I said, turning back to my work.
  • My heart beating frantically,
  • Gosh I am Eva Alessio, I never get scared, but this man here has managed to bring out that emotion I have long trashed.
  • I could feel his eyes on me, watching my every move. This was going to be more challenging than I thought. But I had to stay focused. My mission depended on it.
  • With every sweep of the duster and every arranged item, I reminded myself why I was here. I had to play the part of the dutiful maid perfectly, gain his trust, and find a way to bring down the Moretto empire from within.
