Chapter 5 On Hold
- EVA
- The moment I locked eyes with Diego, I felt a chill run down my spine. His presence was overwhelming, his gaze piercing and his aura intimidating.
- It took all my self-control not to let my hands tremble as I picked up my phone and hurried away. I had to keep my composure, but it was becoming increasingly difficult.
- Once I was out of sight, I ducked into a small storage room, my heart pounding. I needed to report this encounter to Dominik.
- The mission was growing more complicated by the hour.I pulled out my phone and texted quickly: "Bumped into Diego. He's watching all of us closely. Need to be more cautious."Almost immediately, Dominik replied: "Understood. Stay alert. We can't afford any mistakes."I put my phone away and took a deep breath. I couldn’t afford to let fear control me.
- I had to keep my wits about me if I was going to survive this and complete our mission.
- I headed out to where I was summoned by Lucia, I opened the door to Antonio's office, they stood the other servants, ones I realized were new.
- I immediately snuggled myself between them, trying to know what was happening.
- “What's wrong?” I asked the assistant cook, a young girl about my age who was too shy for my liking, her beauty was definitely commendable.
- “Signore Moretto is conducting a strict review of the new staff for safety”
- “Oh okay” my mouth formed an O shape, my heart skipped at the revelation.
- “What is your name?I am Chelsea” she offered.
- “Eva,” I answered coldly.
- “Nice to meet you” she said, dragging me in for a hug.
- Eww…, I hate hugs but I tried not to push her off me but luckily for me, the door flew open and the Mafia Heir strolled in like he had zero problems, and Chelsea immediately released me.
- His hair carefully combed and oiled,
- I must say for an enemy he looked hot and handsome, his broad shoulders and muscles made the cloth he was wearing seemed like it would rip out any moment.
- I personally think his lips were too pink for a man so grim and grumpy, I wondered what he would look like when he smiled..
- His tattoo peeked out from his collar and I found myself locked in the art, trying to find out what that it.
- “What is your name?” A calculated but intimidated voice drew me out of my treacherous thoughts.
- Guess he has been asking other people and it is now my turn.
- “Eva,”I replied to the overly gorgeous enemy.
- “When did you start working in the Manor and what are your skills”
- “Three weeks ago, housekeeping, cleaning and cooking”
- “Do you have any parents in Italy?” He asked, staring at my face intently,as if that would bring out the truth from me.
- If there was one thing I knew I could do and what I was taught too,was not evading a stare, I have mastered the act of holding a strong eye contact.
- “They live in Spain, I only have my grandmother here” I said, staring directly into the nature like eyes that held my gaze,a look of indifference plastered on his face, not giving away any information, making it hard for me to discern if he suspects anything.
- Just then the two men who came with him waltz in, I found out their names are Sebastian and Carlo.
- I would have thought these men intimidating until I saw them bickering down the hall like children.
- The first Sebastian, tall, his hair combed backwards, his handsome face complemented the tattoo on his face. Carlo on the other hand had a rugged kind of handsomeness, his hair was scattered, his suit not buttoned and his arm tattoo visible.
- What was their love for tattoo Intense?
- I scoffed loudly at the thought, only I didn't know I just got myself in trouble.
- “Who made that sound?” Diego’s voice cut through the room like a knife. His eyes narrowed as they scanned the group. He was looking for a target, and unfortunately, I had just painted one on my back.
- Everyone stood still, afraid to move or speak. I could feel my heart racing, but I kept my face as neutral as possible.
- Diego's gaze landed on me, and I knew I was in for it.
- “Step forward,” he commanded, his voice icy.
- I took a deep breath and stepped forward, meeting his gaze with as much courage as I could muster. “It was me, Signore.”
- He walked towards me slowly, his eyes never leaving mine. “Do you find something amusing, Eva?” he asked, his tone deadly calm.
- “Sorry sir it was a reflex action” I forced my gaze to remain fixed on him as he walked closer, grabbing my neck in the process and slamming me to the wall.
- “You don't look me in the eye” his voice a menacingly low whisper that sent shivers down my spine.
- Before I could bring down my gaze, I was thrown down, his hand leaving my neck and he took a few steps back from me, moving his hands behind him like a karate teacher.
- "Eva, is it?" he asked, his voice smooth but with an edge of suspicion.
- "Yes, sir," I replied, keeping my voice steady.
- "I’d like to ask you a few questions. Follow me."
- I followed him to a small sitting room. He gestured for me to sit, and I complied, my mind racing. He took a seat opposite me, studying me with cold, calculating eyes.
- "Eva? You said you had been working for us for how long?"
- "Just a few weeks, sir," I replied, maintaining my calm.
- "And before that?"
- "I worked for a family in the city. They moved, and I needed a new position."
- He nodded, still watching me closely. "Did you hear anything unusual during that night?Anything that might help us find the saboteur?"
- I shook my head. "No, sir. I was asleep in the servants' quarters."
- He leaned back, a faint smile playing on his lips. "I see. Well, if you do hear anything, you’ll let me know, won’t you?"
- "Of course, sir," I said, meeting his gaze.
- He dismissed me, and I left the room, feeling his eyes on my back. This was going to be more challenging than I thought. Diego was sharp, and he wouldn’t be easy to fool. But I was determined. I’d come too far to be stopped now. The game had just gotten more dangerous, but I was ready.
- —
- I got to the safety of the servants quarters and then placed Dominik on call.
- “Hey, what's up?”
- “Diego is unto me and every other staff for some obscure reason he seems suspicious of me “
- “What do we do now “
- “I suggest we put the operation on hold for now till he is done with his investigation and the matter is forgotten”
- “No,I can't stay here for too long “
- “That is the only way out Eva,you have to gain his trust “
- Sudd
- enly a loud noise came from outside , my heart started beating frantically.
- Who could that be?
- What if the person had heard me talking?
