Chapter 14
- Noémie found it arduous to determine what hurt her the most—the accusations hurled by the aunt or Ajax’s indifferent attitude. She thought it was both. Both of them wounded her deeply. But the way Ajax responded—or rather, didn’t respond—skewered her heart like a blade.
- But what had she even expected? For him to take her side? His aunt wasn’t wrong when she called her a nobody. She was nothing to him. And he shouldn’t be anything to her either. He had taken advantage of her. He had ruined her life. So why did she keep forgetting that? Why did she keep overlooking the suffering that had torn her away from the people she loved—her friends, her family?
- Tears continued to spill from her eyes. No matter how hard she tried to pull herself together—scolding herself for having even the slightest expectations from anyone but herself—the tears only multiplied. Her heart only sank deeper, the invisible blade twisting cruelly.
