• "Nothing!" Aunt Isabella didn’t even glance at her younger nephew. Her full attention remained on Noémi. "I was just asking Madam Rochester what the hell she was doing in Ajax’s bedroom. Were you in there all night? Answer me!"
• If Vincent found the situation unusual, he didn’t show it. Instead, he stormed over and placed himself between his aunt and Noémi, effectively shielding her from Isabella’s scrutiny.
• "I thought Ajax made it clear yesterday—No one is to slander her. Did you forget already?" he said, his voice laced with warning.
