Instead of responding, she grabbed a drink from a servant passing by and dumped it down her throat. Her chest hurt against the cold water. Her eyes stung with a flood of bitter memories that did nothing to bring ease to her heart.
When Vincent offered to take him with her, she should have listened. She knew he would have done something to save her from this sheer mortification that now felt like slime over her skin. She was so exhausted from fighting her own battles, the idea of someone doing that for her did not sound that bad. It felt nice to know there was someone she could depend upon, someone who cared and someone who wouldn’t think twice before putting her first.
