Chapter 2007 Bringing Humiliation Upon Oneself
- “Misunderstanding?” Ica let out a dry laugh. “When the two of you were living in bliss, you never once phoned me to talk about misunderstandings. Now that you need someone’s help, you remember me, and you dare use the word ‘misunderstanding.’ Do you and Gavin really take me for an idiot?”
- “No, Ica. It isn’t like that!” Hannah burst out, her voice tight with urgency. “It’s not that Gavin and I were comfortable and therefore ignored you. Back then, you were doing well, too—living happily with your aunt and uncle—so we didn’t keep in close touch. If trouble had fallen on you instead of us, Gavin and I would have sold everything to help! You’re Gavin’s only sister. How could we possibly not cherish you? Isn’t that so, Ica?”
- Ica snorted. “I have to admire you, Hannah—your words are prettier than a song. You say that if a disaster hit me, you would sell everything to rescue me. Do you think I’m a three-year-old, that easy to fool? You two? Should I really expect help from you? When my parents had just passed away—the darkest, most helpless period of my life—I longed for Gavin to stay with me and offer comfort. And what was he doing? He was busy tallying up my parents’ estate and whispering sweet nothings with you.”
