Chapter 17

• "Charlie brought her car." I say, just as Benjamin comes to stand beside me, smiling kindly again. I can't bear to look at him and disappoint him. He obviously came to join the conversation because he heard his name being mentioned by my crazy mother. If she keeps this up, I just might end up not feeling any guilt about what I did with my stepfather.
• "Really, don't worry about it, Benjamin." I say to him with a weak smile. His face falls by a fraction and it makes me feel awful.
• "But it is such a long drive." My mother prompts.
