• The words that came out of Grant's mouth sounded so sincere and were filled with such amazement that, for one small moment, she really wanted to believe what he was saying. But he was the one who totally destroyed the foundation upon which everything she had ever believed in stood. He had broken her trust into such small pieces; it felt like there was nothing he could do to put them back together.
• The heavy weight of his big confession and their terrible fight seemed to be pressing heavily upon his mind just then. There was only sweat on the forehead, while his white-as-snow face had an almost sickly gray tint in the bright-yellow glow of the lamp on his desk.
