Chapter 18 Cocktails And Cross Examinations

  • Maddison's POV
  • Marcus' pained words had her rushing from the boardroom and down the empty hallway. She rode the elevator many floors to the lobby and it was clean and still compared to the boiling, bubbling anger and restless victory brewing inside her. Stepping out of the spinning glass doors of Harrison Enterprises, it was already evening and the city's air slapped her in the face with a cold shock moving her head to land on the crowded sidewalk. Car horns, far-off sirens and many loud talks hit her, and it felt like a noisier mix compared to the polite, fighting silence of the boardroom.
  • Twenty minutes after that, she pushed open the solid oak door to "The Alchemist," a tiny cocktail bar off a side alley, and inside the bar, stale air was heavy with the smell of gin and lemon, and throbbed to the soft hum of after-work chatter. Amber light from the back of a crowded bar lined with hundreds of strange bottles, threw long shadows across dark wood and leather booths. Maddison spotted Jenna already seated in one of the corner booths, a nearly half-full martini glass in front of her on the table, a naughty glint in her eye. They were meeting for the first time in three weeks.
