  • She had sat there for hours, within the heavy weight inside the dimmed-down ICU with all the beeps. Her throat was sore, but she talked to him anyway, speaking softly into the silence. The surgery is over, and it was a success, she told him, trying to spin it positively. Grant was so very strong, so strong. And she kept her hand resting on her abdomen, a reminder of the unborn child.
  • “I think this little baby is gonna grow up to be an engineer, just like me,” she had whispered, trying to smile, but it seemed like it could shatter. “The baby has been kicking like she’s already trying to test the strength of things.”
