- Downstairs, the house was a flurry of controlled, quiet activity. Carlos had already made his way to the enormous kitchen.
- "Chef," he said in a precise tone. "My grandmother will be dining with us. She prefers simple, authentic Spanish cuisine. I want the Caldo Gallego, a classic Tortilla Española, but ensure the potatoes are cut thinly, as she likes them, and a fresh seabass lightly seasoned with lemon and herbs. Nothing heavy. And a decent bottle of Rioja, 2010 vintage."
- The chef, accustomed to Carlos’s demanding perfection, merely nodded, writing the instructions rapidly.
