Chapter 13 Biting You

  • When I got off the bus by the entrance of the sanitarium, he followed me.
  • I glared at him and questioned, “What do you want? Why do you keep following me?”
  • “I want to bite you,” came his prompt reply.
  • I was speechless. A second later, I asked him what I had been thinking about. “Who was that woman in the hotel? If you have a woman, why did you ask me to go there?”
  • “You have no right to ask me about anything. Running away today was going against the rules. You can't do this next time.” When he said those words, the look on his face was a glacial one. The teasing look he had earlier was nowhere to be seen.
  • The moment his expression changed, I dared not ask anything else. Instead, I hung my head and walked to the ward instead.
  • He ignored me and headed to the office.
  • Perhaps he had gone to talk to the hospital director, for one of the hospital staff added an extra bed in the ward shortly after that and told me that I could sleep there instead of the shabby foldable bed.
  • Before she left, she even told me to contact them if I needed anything and that they would do their best to deal with it.
  • At that, I thought of going to Julien and thanking him, but at one point in time, he had already left the hospital.
  • After washing up, I lay down on the bed, feeling pretty good. For the first time in days, I fell asleep quickly.
  • The next day at work, the director sent a document to me and told me to print it out.
  • The document was a draft of Julien's speech for an upcoming charity event. After reading it once, I noticed many inappropriate phrasing. Back when I was in university, I was a member of the literary society. More or less, I could compose a speech.
  • Thus, I changed the parts I found inappropriate, hoping that Julien would do even better at his speech by then.
  • However, after I handed the copy to the director, he read it and threw the paper on my face. “Who told you to change the words on the document? Who do you think you are?”
  • It was then I realized I had made a mistake. I was but a rookie. I should have done whatever my higher-ups told me to do. Why am I stirring up troubles for myself?
  • “I'm sorry. I'll change it right away. I still have the original copy,” I muttered, my head still hanging.
  • “Presumptuous. If you do this again, you're out of this company,” the director bellowed.
  • Not daring to refute, I lowered my head and left.
  • Right then, Julien came into the office to ask the director about the speech draft. Panicking, I hastily crumpled the draft I had changed without asking anyone and threw it under the table.
  • Still, he noticed it. He walked over and asked, “What is that? Pick it up.”
  • I put on the most innocent look I could summon and stayed still.
  • “Pick it up!” he raised his voice.
  • Hence, I had no choice but to hunch over and pick the crumpled paper back up. “I'm sorry. I won't change anything without telling anyone ever again.”
  • He then took the paper from me and unfolded it.
  • At that, my heart began thumping loudly against my ribcage, fearing that I was going to suffer from another scolding.
  • After reading the edited draft, he raised his head to look at me. “Did you do this?”
  • I lowered my head. “I'm sorry. I know I've made a mistake.”
  • Julien ignored me and gestured for the director to come over.
  • “Sorry, Mr. Starck. The rookie doesn't know the rules, and it's my fault for not watching over her well enough.”
  • “From tomorrow onward, the two of you will swap roles,” Julien said.
  • Both the director and I stared at him, stupefied.
  • “Do you not understand what I mean? From the next day onward, the two of you will swap roles. She'll be the new director.” Julien then shoved the paper into the director's hands and said, “Print a new copy of this.”
  • I panicked. I've replaced the director on the second day of working in the company? This is going against the rules of the workplace! The employees will be furious at me.
  • “It's fine, Mr. Starck. I—”
  • Julien turned around to look at me and hissed, “Are you the one in charge, or am I the one in charge?”
  • That rendered me speechless. Of course he was the one in charge.
  • A week later, I slowly became used to working in the office. One day, I finished work late, having worked overtime. Right as I reached the main doors of the office, I was stopped by a woman in sunglasses.
  • “Are you Natalie Mackenzie?”
  • This voice sounds familiar. Where have I heard it from? Right. It's the voice of the woman humming a tune in the bathroom that day.
  • I then studied the woman in front of me. She had exquisite makeup on and was covered from head to toe by branded goods. Furthermore, a red sports car was parked beside her. She was truly a rich and beautiful woman.
  • After taking off her sunglasses, she asked, “Do you know me?”
  • She had a beautiful face, and anyone who lived in Jadeborough would know who she was. She was the popular entertainment host and celebrity on Jadeborough Television, Shelby Eyres.
  • “Do you need something from me?” I questioned.
  • “How much do you want? State a price. B*tches like you only want money,” she rudely blurted out.
