Chapter 2

  • “What are you staring at?” The voice came again and the man who had I was surprised to see here leaned close to me, I shut my eyes immediately and waited for the inevitable.
  • Was he going to kiss me as he did in the car? His lips had already brushed on mine, that wasn’t a real kiss, he was going to go for a real kiss before I clasped my lips with my hand. This time he was going to do it even when I shut my eyes.
  • I heard him laugh and I opened my eyes, he was mocking me right now, how foolish and childish. “What are you thinking this time, do you have one of those nasty imaginations in your head again?” He shook his head as he leaned back to the bench he sat on.
  • “Why are you here?” I asked him, I was not expecting to see Robin here, his mother was here and it wasn’t long before we were just talking about him. Was he here to see me?
  • “Why else?” He turned his eyes at me again and I pressed my lips together, he was here to see me, he has a heart, this cold devil has a heart. A smile was beginning to creep up my face but it disappeared when he threw the last bomb, bursting my bubbles.
  • “I came to see my mother.” He looked away from me again. “I made a promise to myself when I returned to Korea to always look at her face every day.” He runs his hands through his hair as he looks up to the sky.
  • I traced his eyes and noticed he was also staring at the birds that were flying freely in the air, I scoffed. Do devils enjoy good things?
  • “I guess those were what you were staring at.” He pointed up to the sky. “You think you can be as free as a bird just by staring at them?” His voice was stern and arrogant.
  • I furrowed my brows. “If you are here to annoy me, then I hope you can just leave, your mother is in the hospital, you can see her since you are here to see her.” I pointed at the hospital, he should just go away, I am not even in a good mood now and he was here to ruin my peace.
  • A smile creeps upon his face. “I was about asking you to come to fly with me rather than staring at these birds.” I looked at him immediately with big eyes. “But I see you don’t want to.” Robin got up and straightened his shirt. “Then…” He turned to leave and I held his shirt as he turned his eyes at me. “What?”
  • I stare up at the birds that were flying in the sky and then turn my eyes back to him, “Can we truly fly like the birds?” I asked like a complete idiot, if that would make me stop worrying about my father who was still undergoing some surgery then I would truly love it.
  • Robin gently sat next to me and stared at me intensely. “Look here, you can do whatever you want without wishing or imagining them, you can live as free as you want and as happy as you wish, but for now, come see your father.”
  • I blinked, looking at him skeptically. “My father is still undergoing surgery,” I told him softly but he stood up, putting his hand into his pocket. He looked at me for the first time with what seemed like warm eyes.
  • “Your father is okay now and wants to see you.” He told me softly and I jerked up from the chair with my eyes wide open.
  • “What, my dad is awake?” I looked at him and without waiting for his response I made a run into the hospital and to the room the nurse had told me he had been moved to. I stopped at the door and tears brimmed in my eyes as I looked at the bed where my father lay with my mother by his side and I couldn’t move.
  • “Ivana,” My father called out softly and I took gentle steps towards him. “Ivana.”
  • “Dad.” I sobbed as I embraced him, not caring if he had some injury that would hurt. “Dad,” I just kept on calling his name, unable to say another word, relief washed over me and my tears just couldn’t stop falling. I didn’t know what the doctor’s final result was, but my father was awake and that was all that matters.
  • “I am so sorry Ivana.” My father said as he gently wiped my tears with the tip of his thumb, this was when I glanced at him over.
  • “Are you truly okay dad? No complications? Can you walk? Do you still feel pain? You gave me a scare.” I blurted that all out without hearing his response and began to cry again, the room was silent with only me sobbing loudly like a kid whose candy had been stolen.
  • “Your father is okay now.” I heard my mother’s voice and turned to look at her, she was no longer in tears, I guess she was also comforted by seeing him awake. “The doctor says he will be fine now, you don't have to worry much.”
  • “Really?” I looked at my father and embraced him again. “I was scared dad, I don’t want you to be at the hospital anymore, I don’t like it here and I don’t want any of you to be here too,” I said softly and my mother pats my back and my father pats my hair gently.
  • “I promise you.” My father said softly and the tears in my eyes seized. I always love when he says these words to me, my father is going to be fine and alright.
  • “Ivana,” I heard my name from behind and turned to see Kate in tears as she ran over to us. “Mr Philip, are you alright?” Kate asked as she squatted close to him. My parents know Kate very well and she was like a family to us too.
  • My father raised his hands and wiped Kate’s tears. “I am okay Kate.”
  • “I was so scared when Ivana told me what had happened, I would have come last night late when I heard it, but no vehicles were coming this way that late, I had to take the first train heading this way this morning, you gave me a scare.” She sobbed again and I smiled with tears in my eyes. Kate was the best friend anyone can get.
  • “Stop crying Kate, you and Ivana are just two crybabies.” My father said and my mother patted Kate's hair gently, as kids we had always loved this, acting like two twin sisters. Kate's parents were not always at home so she sometimes came to stay over at our place. My parents treated her as their child.
  • Kate looked over at me and said softly. “Ivana, someone decided to come along.” She told me and I thought she meant Robin since I had noticed him standing by the doorway when I embraced my father, but when I turned to look at the doorway, Robin was not alone, instead, he was having a glaring contest with none other than Hinn Carlos and I gasped.
