Chapter 57

  • John's POV
  • The mansion atmosphere has been in tension now for a couple of days ever since Nathan's arrest and detention at the precinct. My father and Jessie have been tiredlessly working to see that he was released, but all proved abortive. The intensity of the crime and the public sentiment were so overwhelming that Father had already gotten frustrated and exhausted. As for my mother and me, we remained unbothered. We were less concerned about it. In truth, Mother and I were kind of excited about his detainment, but we dare not show it for fear of my father's wrath.
  • Jessie has been in charge of Nathan's duty, overseeing the hospital's welfare with a level of competence that was commendable. I had once teased her some time that she should be glad if Nathan ends up in the prison, as she would be the one who would benefit the most by inheriting his role as the hospital's director. She had responded in a fierce tone and issued me a stern warning never to say such insolent words ever again, stating that Nathan was our older brother and that no one deserves his place, not even she could ever take his place. I merely stared at her and nodded in agreement, as I lacked the energy to argue with her even though I had felt otherwise.
