- In the evening, Vivian had one of her assistants call Adrian to meet her at a secluded spot by the private lake. As they strolled along the dimly lit path, he remained silent.
- Vivian had expected him to speak first—to assure her that everything was settled, that Cassandra was out of the picture. But to her surprise, he said nothing. His face bore fresh scratches, as if a cat had clawed him, and the sight of it made her uneasy.
- After several minutes of tense silence, Vivian abruptly stopped and turned to him. "Did you finalize it? Did you take half of her assets?"
