  • When Emerald woke up next, the welcome emptiness of her mind comforted her. The path that had brought her to this restful state had been a treacherous one, and the nightmares that plagued her sleep had felt all too real. But now, she cherished the hope that she could, even for just a moment, exist without recalling the lingering terror—or, if fortune smiled, for the rest of her life.
  • "I gave her a small dose of Prozac earlier to help calm her down. She's sleeping now," said the school nurse. As Emerald slowly sat up, she wondered whom the nurse was speaking to.
  • "May I see her anyway?" came Andrew's voice, a sound that elicited mixed emotions in Emerald. Despite wanting to see him, an inner voice nudged her with the idea that their relationship needed reconsideration. She irrationally blamed him for falling into Dylan's trap, even though she knew deep down it wasn't his fault.
