Chapter 3 A Familiar Shadow
- The luxury car rolled slowly away from Rania’s home, gliding down the quiet street bathed in the last light of the afternoon sun. Aleksander sat leaning back against the soft leather seat, his gaze fixed on the window without truly seeing anything. His thoughts remained with Rania, walking with heavy, listless steps toward her door. Her back looked fragile, as though she might crumble to pieces at any moment. Just as he was about to look away, something small and faintly glinting caught his eye on the seat where she had been sitting. A phone with a casing scratched in several places lay there, left behind when she had stepped out unsteady on her feet.
- Aleksander picked it up. Its surface still felt faintly warm. He realized she had not yet noticed it was gone. Her mind had been in too much turmoil to check anything at all. Without overthinking it, he leaned forward and spoke to the driver, his voice calm yet firm.
- “Turn around.”
- The driver nodded in obedience and turned the wheel slowly to head back. Aleksander settled back into his seat, his index finger tapping gently against the smooth device in his hand. His intention was simple. Return the phone as soon as possible, make sure Rania received it, and then leave without creating any further disturbance. But fate seemed to have other plans, compelling him to face the truth he had been trying so hard to ignore.
- The car had not come to a full stop at the curb before Rania’s gate. From behind the partially drawn curtains of the car window, through the gap in the gate that had not yet been fully shut, Aleksander’s gaze fell upon the scene unfolding in the front yard. Arkan stood there, face flushed red with anger, his finger pointed accusingly at Rania as she stood bowed and silent. Every word that spilled from the man’s mouth was sharp and full of contempt, cutting through the quiet afternoon until it reached Aleksander’s ears. His hand tightened around the window frame until his knuckles turned white, fine veins rising along his wrist. His expression hardened. The gaze that had been calm only moments before turned sharp, holding a simmering fury that did not break loose. He held himself back. Every muscle in his body fought the urge to storm out and destroy the man where he stood. The patience he had never before had to test was now stretched to its very limit.
- Just as Arkan turned to leave Rania behind, the phone in his pocket rang out sharply, shattering the silence. Arkan paused and pulled it out, his hand still trembling with leftover rage. He glanced at the screen showing an unknown number and answered with clear impatience.
- “Who is this?” he snapped, his breath still coming fast.
- A voice came through the line, deep, low, and heavy with authority. It cut through Arkan like ice, reaching all the way to his bones.
- “Stop.”
- One word. Spoken in a flat tone that carried absolute command, as though the very air around Arkan had suddenly been sucked away. His face drained instantly of all color. It felt as though his blood had turned to ice in his veins. He knew that voice. A voice few people dared to hear directly. The voice of Aleksander William.
- “Mr. William…” Arkan breathed, his voice cracking and barely audible, as though he could scarcely believe what he was hearing. “How… how do you have my number?”
- “Leave this place. Now.”
- It was not a question. It was an absolute order that could not be argued. Arkan swallowed hard, cold sweat beginning to bead at his temples. The presence radiating from the other end of the line felt so powerful that he could almost feel eyes watching him, from behind the windows of the house, from behind the trees, from every shadowed corner. He did not dare turn to look. He did not dare search for who might be watching him. He could almost feel unseen guards and watchers standing just out of sight. Fear instantly swallowed his anger. Without saying another word, without a single farewell, Arkan hurried across the yard as though chased by the shadow of death itself. He broke into a run toward his car, started the engine with shaking hands, and sped away as fast as he possibly could.
- Rania stood frozen in the doorway, her chest rising and falling as she fought to steady her breathing. When her gaze swept toward the shaded edge of the road, beyond the thick canopy of trees not far from the gate, she saw a tall figure standing perfectly still. The sinking sun fell across part of his face, bright enough for her to recognize him completely. It felt as though Rania’s heart had stopped beating. She knew that face. She had known who he was since the night before, as her senses slowly returned to her. Aleksander William. Isabel’s father. The father of the woman who was now betrothed to the man who had just insulted her.
- Rania held her breath. He stood there not far away, upright and calm, looking at her intently as though he needed to be certain she was all right. Rania found herself unable to look away. She knew who he was. She knew how dangerous the bond between them truly was. Yet when their eyes met, her fear slowly gave way to something far more confusing. Aleksander did not step closer. He did not call out. He did not lift a hand. He simply stood there in silence, keeping his distance yet making his presence feel steady and protective. Rania stood motionless, her heart trembling as she met his gaze, seeing a depth in his eyes she could not begin to understand.
- Aleksander realized she knew exactly who he was. The doubt in her eyes was gone, replaced by clear understanding that was quickly turning into deep bewilderment. He still held her phone firmly in his hand. He could have walked over then, handed it to her, and left. But he held back. Their meeting needed the right moment. Not when she was this broken and distraught. Not when neither of them was ready to face the full truth of who they were to each other. He did not want their next meeting to be nothing more than returning a forgotten object. He wanted to arrange things properly, to ensure that when they met again, Rania would fully understand that she could no longer run from what had taken root between them.
- Aleksander gave a slow, slight nod. It was barely visible, yet clear enough for Rania, who had not taken her eyes off him. It was a silent message. I know you recognize me. Wait for me.
- Slowly, Aleksander turned away. His tall figure vanished back into the waiting car. The door closed quietly, and the vehicle pulled away until it disappeared around the bend. Rania stood alone in the doorway. Her breathing slowly steadied, though her heart still raced unevenly. She knew who he was. She knew he still had her phone. And now she understood completely. Aleksander had deliberately chosen not to return it that day. He had kept it on purpose, as a way to reach out to her again. When the time was right, he would call. And when that call came, Rania knew there would be no turning back.
- Rania walked slowly inside and closed the door. She leaned back against it and shut her eyes tight. The truth she had known since the night before settled over her once more. The man who had taken her innocence was the father of the woman now engaged to her former fiancé. And her phone, her entire life, was now in his hands. She did not know when he would call. But one thing she knew with absolute certainty. When that call came, her world would change all over again. And this time, there would be no way back.
