Chapter 10 Play Hardball

  • Trevor knew Wilbur was constantly reminding him and Serena about the recording and that they should cooperate.
  • At that, he looked toward Serena, who was pouting aggrievedly at him.
  • Using only his gaze, he signaled Serena to bear with it for now and that he would surely deal with Wilbur once they had him.
  • Since she was left with no choice, Serena massaged Wilbur's shoulders with everything she got.
  • On the other hand, Wilbur smiled at Trevor while savoring Serena's massage. "So, Trevor, what do you want to talk to me about that's so important you even sounded anxious on the phone? I'm still sleepy from not getting enough rest thanks to working overtime last night."
  • "How do you want to settle the recording?" asked Trevor as he stared coldly at Wilbur.
  • "I've told Miss Light, haven't I? Did she not relay it to you? On the surface, you guys are my bosses, but behind everyone's back, you guys have to listen to me."
  • "You're nothing but a mere salesman from the marketing department. What makes you think you can call the shots?"
  • Wilbur realized Trevor's meaning—he was not in the same league as Trevor and Serena, after all.
  • Hence, Wilbur turned grim instantly and stared coldly at Trevor. "I scored Phyllis' three-year exclusive distribution rights in Northwich Province the first month I entered Labyrinth, and I was also a sales champion for three years. I was even a sales supervisor for two years. Yes, it's my fault for purchasing a batch of defective parts, but that cannot repudiate my ability. If you guys hadn't constantly been suppressing and exploiting me, do you think you guys would've been able to stay in your position so securely? To me, you guys are nothing but sh*t!"
  • Though the shipment of Phyllis' spare parts wasn't big in Northwich Province, its share had been increasing substantially in recent years despite Northwich being a third-tier province.
  • As long as Labyrinth Systems could maintain the bunch of distributors in Northwich, their future profit would only increase further.
  • Seeing that Wilbur was getting worked up, Trevor hurriedly calmed him down. "Alright, take it easy. Let's leave all that aside for now. The reason why I've called you in is to talk about the present. If you can guarantee only the three of us know about this recording, we will consider all your requests as long as they don't contradict the company's interests."
  • Trevor, that sly old dog, was trying to be sneaky again. Nothing he promised was affirmative.
  • "I'm not asking for a consideration but an agreement!"
  • Upon seeing the resolution on Wilbur's face, Trevor knew he could only agree to it for now.
  • In reality, he and Serena were well aware of Wilbur's capabilities.
  • The defective parts Wilbur obtained from Jane's brother would have actually been dealt with one way or another. However, the old hag that was Trevor meddled behind the curtains because he feared Wilbur would be promoted very quickly because of his capabilities, thus eventually threatening his position as the director.
  • Throughout the three years since then, Trevor and Serena would suppress and exploit him however they could.
  • Of course, Wilbur had thought about jumping ship. However, the incident left a sour note in the industry, so all the companies he applied to had rejected him. Plus, Jane constantly held his measly wage against him. If he ended up jobless for some time after he resigned, their conflict would only worsen.
  • As such, Wilbur decided to stay after much consideration, enduring his work life as a loser in Labyrinth Systems.
  • Seeing that Trevor finally agreed, Wilbur got up from his seat and smiled at Serena. "You need to work on your technique, Rena!"
  • To that, Serena rolled her eyes at him with disdain. "Whatever!"
  • Then, Wilbur looked toward Trevor and grinned. "Trevor, you've got to help Rena improve her massaging technique! Don't just tell her what to do. Do you have no idea what you have left in you when you're already getting on in years? I suggest you go home more often and look after your missus. I mean, look at her—one meal of hers is half a month of Rena's!"
