- "You can’t just expect me to fall in line, Lowan," I said, trying to make my voice firm, even as my pulse hammered in my ears. "This—this—is insane. You—all of you—are insane."
- Lowan’s eyes locked onto mine, and there was that flicker again. The one I didn’t know how to interpret. His expression softened, but his gaze never wavered.
- "I’m not asking you to fall in line," Lowan replied, his voice low, steady. "I’m asking you to see that this isn’t just about us. It’s about the bond. About what’s between us."
